Using Dream Interpretation as a Bridge to the Subconscious
By Michael Allen
It is not known why we dream, yet, the prevailing theories are that we dream for pleasure, to interpret the day’s events, to refresh the mind, to balance out daily events or for self-knowledge. Dreams can act as a road to the subconscious and although a great deal is still unknown about dreaming analyzing dreams can be a source of great personal knowledge (Asdreams). During sleep the brain’s electrical signals become more regular. After a person drifts off Rapid Eye Movement, begins and lasts for about fifteen to twenty minutes. Muscle paralysis then begins and the eyes begin to follow dream characters. The sleeper’s breathing becomes shallower and the kidneys slow to reduce excretion. The brain’s regular alpha and beta waves shift to delta waves as the brain prepares for deeper sleep cycles After the REM phase of sleep the dreamer experiences a deep sleep which lasts approximately one to two hours. During deep sleep the potential for sleep walking or talking begins. The process of moving from REM sleep to deep sleep happens as a cycle three to four times during the night. It is during deep sleep that dreaming begins. Some of the most common dreams that occur during deep sleep are dreams about teeth, flying, animals, and being nude in crowds. Teeth dreams are often symbolic of anxieties over appearance while flying dreams can represent a feeling of freedom during wakefulness. Dreaming about animals can often be a projection of the dreamer’s own characteristics onto that animal i.e. a bear representing aggression is in fact the dreamer’s own repressed aggression. A generalization of a naked dream, within a crowd, is symbolic of the dreamer’s fear of exposure. The environment in which the naked dream takes place is the environment in which the dreamer is afraid to show vulnerability. Dream interpretations are unique to each dreamer and each dreamer will interpret their own individual dreams differently In order for a dreamer to accurately interpret a dream certain psychological devices can help amplify dream symbols. One way to amplify a dream symbol is to take a piece of paper along with a pen and at the instance of awakening write down the dream and expand on the visual imagery. For instance if you remember dreaming about a brook write down the word brook and then brainstorm any other words that come to mind when you think of this word. Write down as many ideas as possible. Close your eyes and visualize as much of the dream as you can to refresh your memory about the symbol. Dreams are often messages sent from the subconscious to the conscious mind in the form of a code. By writing a dream down and amplifying the visual imagery the code becomes easier to decipher. Once all of the major symbols from the dream are written down look over your writings and see if an answer is being put forth by the dream. Is the dream answering a question from your daily life? Do your dreams have a recurring theme? These are the types of questions that a dreamer can ask oneself to find a hidden message within a dream. As well, by taking the time to decipher dreams a dreamer can find a deeper understanding to their motivations and behaviours. Some common dream characters that represent the self are the appearance of a prince/princess, a child, or old man/old woman. The appearance of an old man or old woman is often seen as a representation of an individual’s true self. Listening to messages from these types of characters is very important and in some instances can even be a wake up call to change certain behaviours or to pursue a different lifestyle. In addition, a man dreaming about female characters and a women dreaming about male characters is very common as the inner Anima or Animus will often contact the dreamer through the subconscious. The Anima is a male’s female energy while the Animus is the female’s male energy. The inner Anima and Animus are often unconscious within most people and dreaming offers an opportunity for these types of energy to surface into the conscious. Dream interpretation can add insight and provide answers to a person’s daily life. Through practice and patience a dreamer can connect with the subconscious and benefit from a part of ourselves that is often hidden from view. Although, the answers to many dreams do not become clear even through multiple interpretations by being patient and continuing with the process a deeper awareness of the subconscious becomes the goal. Contributor's Note
Falling or drowning are two of the most common nightmares among people of all ages, and may be a reflection of feeling insecure, helpless or of having no support or solid grounding. Some people may actually fall from their beds during this dream. Check out my website for movie previews: http://www.28dayslateranalysis.com/
