The Older Man Younger Woman Relationship, Can it Last?
The practice of older men dating younger women is nothing new and is seen as socially acceptable as most older men have established themselves in some way while having more to offer their younger female partners. Older, wealthy men have even more opportunities to date as their financial security adds to their overall attractiveness to the opposite sex (WebMD). There are also many benefits for the man to date a younger woman as a younger, healthier woman offers the chance for a man to procreate and pass on his genes to another generation. This is why women in their early to late twenties are so sought after by men, and women know it. Men are hard-wired to be attracted to younger, beautiful women (Socy). It is the most common pairing within Western society for an older man to be with a younger women. Despite a greater prevalence, in recent years, of younger men dating older more mature women, the older man younger woman scenario remains the social norm. Some women who date older men are seen as a "trophy" or as an object of status by the man or by society in general (Wikipedia). The use of the word "trophy" often relates to the man's ego, as the woman is seen by the man or society as a representation of his wealth, power, and status. On the other hand, the term "gold-digger" has often been applied to women who choose to date older, wealthier men. The stereotype still remains that a woman would choose to be with an older man only for his money. Either way any relationship that is founded on ego is unlikely to last over an extended period of time (Socy). There are challenges to the older man younger woman relationship scenario, specifically jealousy (Socy). When a man is more established financially than his younger partner then feelings of jealousy can be aroused in relation to financial matters. If financial matters are handled with a one-sided approach, with the either partner being left out of the scenario, then an unequal relationship will be created. Unequal pairings can lead to resentment. As well, financial concerns are a leading cause of break-ups. As well, when a mature man is with a younger woman then issues of trust will be brought up on both sides. Will he leave me for a younger girl or will she be more physically attracted to a younger man? These are questions that might come up over the course of relationship and would have to be dealt with for the relationship to succeed. One of the best ways for a relationship, of any type, to have endurance is through the sharing of common goals, faith, standards and morals. The only way to determine what a partner believes in is through communication and by taking the time to get to know another person. Quickly moving into a physical relationship without getting to know a partner well will often doom most relationships, regardless of age, from the start. Finally, the challenges of age differing relationships can be overcome with a general understanding of a partner's needs and this takes time, along with patience. The initial time put into understanding a partner in the beginning of a relationship, will act as a foundation from which an older man younger woman relationship can succeed.
