Five Tips to Improve Online Poker Play

By Michael Allen

There are many sites on the internet where players can compete in poker tournaments over a secure internet connection. Pokerstars is probably one of the largest poker sites and it has been around for several years but everyone must choose a poker site that is best for them.

One of the best features on Pokerstars is the Sit & Go Texas hold ‘em format along with the opportunity to use play chips. Play chips cost nothing and most players will start off with a 1000 play chip stack. One of the best things about play chips is that if you lose them another 1000 chips will be sent to you within an hour. As well, for intermediate players if you reach the 1,000,000 play chip level there is the option to cash them out for a $10 payment. In order to get everyone to that 1,000,000 play chip level let us start off with some tips.

1) First off the Sit & Go tournaments are one of the best options to begin with because of the wide range of play chip entry fees. There is the lowest 300 play chip level and the levels increase incrementally to a maximum 200000 play chip level. By entering a 2000 play chip level there is a chance that a player can potentially rake-in 200000 for finishing in first place. Even by getting into the top thirty-six of a 2000 play chip tournament there is a possible 3600 play chip payout. By entering into intermediate size play chip tournaments the payouts can be large and sometimes even 200:1. The risks are small while the rewards are large. So start off at one of these tables once you have 2000 in play chips.

2) When entering large tournaments of 300 or more players sit back and watch the action and forgo the frenetic action of the first few hands. Only play hands like Ace/Ace (The Bullets), King/King (Cowboys), or Queen/Queen (The Ladies). Many players who participate in large tournaments have little experience and will go all-in on poor hands for small pots, thereby, taking great risks for small rewards.

In the poker world players that play recklessly are affectionately known as “Fish” or sometimes less affectionately as “Donkeys.” Early in a 300 person tournament pots can average between 100 to 300 play chips and the “Fish” will often go all-in to win these small pots. So, sit back and let the inexperienced players self-destruct while keeping your initial chip stack.

3) A player must fold, on average fifteen to twenty hands and sometimes even more before they play a solid pair. Be patient and wait for those great hands before betting into a pot and then pray for a set (three of a kind). By being patient and selecting the best hands to play you will experience the rush of excitement when you win a hand with your set.

4) As the tournament gets to the hundred player mark start betting to build your chip stack. At this level many of the tournament tables have empty chairs. This means that now is the time to bet as a player will be competing against fewer players. Mathematically your chances of winning go up with fewer players in the pot. Now, increase your betting hands to 9/9 (Meat Hooks), 10/10 and higher pairs. In addition, play Ace/Jack (Ajax), Ace/Queen (Big Chick), and Ace/King (Big Slick). These are all good hands now, play them with confidence.

5) As the tournament winds down start increasing the size of your bets and knock out other players. With the tournament down to only a few dozen players be aggressive and let the other players know you’re here to win. As well, let the antes or price of entering each hand knock out some of the players with low chip stacks. This type of aggressive play will allow you to get into the top ten and potentially win the tournament.

By following these five tips a player can; increase their chip size, see more flops, and have a lot more fun in the process.

If you would like additional tips check out David Sklansky’s “No Limit Hold ‘Em,” or any of Dan Harrington’s novels on no limit hold ‘em.

Finally, remember bad beats (having a strong hand and losing because of a lucky draw) happen and are a part of the game, do not take it personally. If you’re patient and persistent and remember these tips lady luck is sure to shine her light on you.
